The Group FaceTime call feature was one of the most awaited features in iOS 12 after Apple’s announcement for the same. Although promised for iOS 12, it was missing and was found in iOS 12.1. The Group FaceTime lets us FaceTime up to 31 other people at the same time. And yourselves being the 32nd person. So in total 32 people in a single FaceTime call. How do we keep track of who is talking or who is not? Is everyone even listening? Wait did someone just doze off? Utter mess and chaos. Anyway, before we get into all that, it is important to know how to perform a group FaceTime call. And today we are gonna tell you how.
How to Make Group FaceTime call on iPhone?
There are three possible ways of how you can make a Group FaceTime audio or video call. First through the FaceTime app itself, next through the messages app and last by using the Phone application. Find the detailed guide to do a Group FaceTime below.
Method 1: Using the Facetime app itself
This is the most straight-forward and the most convenient way to make a group FaceTime call on your apple device. We will make use of the FaceTime app itself. iOS 12.1 lets us FaceTime more than one person at a time by simply adding them to the list. To make a FaceTime video or audio call using the FaceTime application follow the below steps:
Step 1: Locate the FaceTime app icon in the app tray (green colored with a camcorder type image in the center) and tap on it to open.
Step 2: On opening the app, you will see your FaceTime history log. In the top right corner, you should see a “+”. The “+” stands for new FaceTime. Tap on it to make a FaceTime call
Step 3: In the blank space next to “To:” type in the name or the contact number of the person you wish to FaceTime.
Step 4: Now go on and keep adding the names or numbers of all the people you want to have a group FaceTime session with one after the other. The names or numbers will be separated by a comma.
You can enter up to 31 individual contacts. You, yourself are considered as the 32nd person and that’s the maximum number of people you can have a FaceTime call with at any given time.
Step 5: Tap on Audio to make a group audio Facetime call or on Video if you want to have a group video Facetime call.
Method 2: Using a Message Group
This might be an even easier method than previous if you already have a message group with the people you want to FaceTime. The members of the group have the liberty to choose if they want to join in on the call or when to drop out. The people in the group will receive an alert that a FaceTime call is taking place. They just need to tap on the Join button to join the call. The alert notification will also specify the number of participants in the active FaceTime call. Here is how to FaceTime a group using the native messages app:
Step 1: Open the Messages application on your Apple device (found on the bottom tray on most occasions)
Step 2: Locate the existing group you would like to FaceTime. If there isn’t one, go ahead and create a new one.
Step 3: You need to click on the area that shows the number of people in the group. It should be right on top of the screen, below the profile picture icons of group participants. It says “x people >”
Step 4: Right in the middle, you should see the option to FaceTime. Go ahead and tap on FaceTime.
Method 3: Through the Phone app
In this method, you will first be making a FaceTime call to one person and then add the others to the same call using the new features. Making a FaceTime call through the Phone app is pretty simple. Anyway here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Open the Phone App on your iPhone.
Step 2: Find the first person you want to FaceTime from the contacts list or the recent list. Tap on the icon next to their name to bring up options.
Step 3: From the available options, choose the one to Video Call them.
Now we will add more people to the call we already made.
Step 4: Once the call has started, click on the triple dots ... to open up the options menu.
Step 5: You will see the following screen. At the bottom of the screen, there is the option to “Add Person” to the call.
Step 6: Tap on Add Person and select the contacts that you wish to add to the call.
The person you tried to add will receive an alert notification asking them to join the call.
Group Facetime Call Not Working?
Make sure the below requirements are meant before attempting a Group FaceTime:
- Everyone needs to be using an Apple Device running iOS version 12.1. A participant won’t be able to join if he is on iOS 12.
- The devices being used must an iPhone 6s or a later released iPhone, iPad Pro or anything from, later on,iPad Air 2 or an iPad Mini 4.
- There are a few other older Apple devices that run iOS 12.1 but those can only join in as an Audio Participant.
- The participants will need to set up their respective devices to receive FaceTime calls over 4G i.e cellular data if they are not connected to a working WiFi.
We hope the above methods helped you have a fun little group FaceTime session with your family and friends. There are a few other features that you might find fun to play around with. Features like photo filters, replacing heads with personal Animojis, stickers and so on. Anyway, have a great time with all the Group FaceTimes that you now know how to make.
